Azadeh Shamee
Azadeh Shamee is an Iranian oud player and Persian literature professional living in Melbourne, Australia. Born in Iran in 1979, she began studying the oud and Persian music theory with PhD scholar and oud player Negar Bouban in 2005. Since then, she has performed in a variety of concerts and musical projects in both Iran and Australia.
With a Bachelor of Arts in Persian Literature and a background in creative writing education, Azadeh sees a profound connection between her literary and musical practices. Her approach to the oud is deeply informed by the close relationship between Persian poetry and Iranian music, two artistic traditions that have evolved together throughout Iranian cultural history. As a musician, Azadeh's principal influences include Mansour Nariman, Mohammad Firouzi, and Negar Bouban. Azadeh’s research focuses on the oud's ancient and extensive journey through Iran, the Middle East, and Andalusia. As part of an independent research project, she explores this subject by collecting and studying reliable, authoritative sources.
